A substantial new discovery has been made by Irish researchers studying the implications of cocaine addiction treatment and the chances of successful rehabilitation.

A psychological test developed by National University of Ireland Psychology professor Dermot Barnes-Holmes can predict with significant accuracy the chances of a cocaine addict kicking the habit during rehab.

A trial using the test was done at New York University on a group of 25 men and three women, average age 37, all of whom had been using cocaine for about 15 years.

“Our system has far-reaching implications for the treatment of drug addiction,” said Barnes-Holmes.

The test demonstrated that the addict’s own beliefs about their drug use and the negative or positive consequences associated with continued use are a major factor in the success or failure of cocaine rehab treatment.

The study was published in the January 2012 issue of the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Bottom Line: cocaine rehab is less likely to be successful if the addict had strong positive beliefs and associations with the drug. Those with negative beliefs about the consequences of addiction were more likely to succeed in rehab.
